06 Apr Chamber Member Spotlight Landscape Design of Goldsboro
In February of 1980 Danny VanDevender decided to start a small business he would name Landscape Design of Goldsboro. He did this with a pick-up truck and a small tractor and a lot of ambition. After becoming frustrated with the limited supply and poor quality of plant material needed for his jobs, he started growing plants himself, literally in his own back yard. In 1987 his wife Peggy VanDevender and cousin Tommy Bostic joined the business to help keep up with the growing nursery that they decided to name Jericho Farms.
By the mid-90s Landscape Design had grown to be one of eastern North Carolina’s largest landscape companies, performing work across North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Jericho Farms, meanwhile, was shipping plant material as far away as New York and Texas.
In 1999, only three years after suffering moderate losses from Hurricane Fran, Hurricane Floyd hit and completely destroyed the nursery and landscape headquarters that were located on Arrington Bridge Road. The VanDevenders were not discouraged. With the same hard work and determination they used to start their business, Landscape Design and Jericho farms were relocated to Pikeville where they remain today.
For over 40 years the VanDevenders operated on the principal of taking care of their customers and employees as if they were a part of their family, which has resulted in life long costumer relationships and a fiercely loyal team that provides unmatched quality and service.
After over 40 years in the industry Danny and Peggy VanDevender sold Landscape Design and Jericho Farms to Mark and Lauren Metzler. This husband and wife team fully intend to continue to build on the successful foundation that was formed by over 40 years of hard work and determination. We look forward to another 40 years of servicing clients across North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia; and shipping plants all up and down the east coast.
